Funny retirement wishes should sound like a shared joke, not a roast.

The safest funny message points at a harmless habit, familiar meeting, or piece of office folklore. If the joke needs an apology, leave it out of the card.

Jokes about shared work habits

A good in-joke is still understandable to someone who was not there. Give the setup in the sentence.

Original examples

  • We have retired your colour-coded spreadsheet in your honour. This is a lie. We are too frightened to touch it.
  • The 9:03 coffee run will continue, but standards are expected to fall immediately.
  • You can finally leave a meeting without someone saying, 'One last thing before you go.' Enjoy retirement.
  • We promise not to message you with a quick question. We have written the promise down, so now it is official.

Funny with a warm landing

Let the joke open the door, then say the true thing plainly.

Original examples

  • You spent twenty years telling us to read the instructions, so naturally we have ignored every retirement guide and written our own. We will miss your patience more than we can say.
  • Your chair is available, your mug is contested, and your judgment is impossible to replace. Thank you for all three.

Jokes to leave out

Age, memory, health, death, money, marriage, and being useless at home are lazy targets. They can also expose private circumstances. Skip them even if a generic list suggests otherwise.

  • Anything about declining health or memory
  • Assumptions about pensions or financial security
  • Jokes at a spouse or partner's expense
  • Stories that embarrass the person in front of clients or family
  • Protected traits, appearance, or private relationships

Make a stock joke belong to them

Generic: 'Now every day is a weekend.' Specific: 'You have chaired the Monday risk call since before half of us joined. Next Monday, please enjoy not knowing what the risks are.' The second line has a shared reference and no age joke.

Common questions

Is it fine to joke about age?
It is usually better not to. A shared workplace habit is more personal and less likely to make someone uncomfortable.
What if the retiree loves dark humor?
Write for the room as well as the recipient. Save the sharper joke for a private message if family, clients, or a large team will see the card.
